In 1718 the Danes arrived on St John and settled in Coral Bay where they built a Fort and a Battery on the peninsula subsequently named Fortsberg.
The Villa Fortscove is located on the tip of the Fortsberg peninsula, a short walk from the original Battery where one can still find the original Danish cannons. The Battery and Fort are listed on the US National Register of Historic Places.
Fortscove is 50 feet from the water of Coral Bay with a private coral beach. The house faces south and is refreshed by the trade winds. The private Fortsberg road to the villa is approximately one mile long and is not paved. The entire Fortsberg peninsula has seven private homes. There is only one home adjacent to Fortscove. This house is owner occupied and is not rented. This is a very quiet, peaceful, remote area.
Coral Bay village is approximately two miles from the house. There one can find grocery stores, low key restaurants like the ever-popular Skinny Legs, and an organic farm, Coral Bay Garden Center, featuring delicious Josephine’s Greens. Coral Bay was listed in the "Top 10 Places to See Before You Die" by the New York Times in 2016.
Fortscove is fully air-conditioned and has been extensively renovated in 2019. The open floor plan kitchen and living area includes handsome Mahogany cabinetry, high end appliances, a stunning marble island with barstools and a separate dining area with furniture by Palecek. Floors throughout are polished Mahogany. The living area is airy with soaring ceilings, custom furniture by B&B Italia and RH, a Manutti twist rug and beautiful lighting. This opens through large glass and Mahogany doors to a waterfront porch with additional living and dining areas. The view from the main house and porch overlooks the pool, gorgeous lawn and beautiful Coral Bay. Fortscove enjoys an extensive art collection featuring St. John artists. Aimee Trayser (The Sea and Me) and Kimberly Boulon (Trunk Bay) oils are featured in the living area as well as a large metal wall sculpture titled Night Sky. St. John is famous for its pottery and potters Catherine Perry and Donald Schnell are well represented in this stunning home.
Fortscove has three bedrooms. The Master Bedroom is quite large and romantic, with a king size bed and custom furniture including a mother of pearl inlaid desk. Lighting is by Arteriors and Donald Schnell. It has a private outdoor covered living area. Water views from this bedroom and porch are stunning and private. There are comfortable reading areas inside and out. The master bath has custom fixtures with a modern double vanity, custom mirrors and lighting. A mahogany and glass door lead to a large outdoor shower. The two other bedrooms are spacious and have custom queen size beds. They are decorated with hand printed fabrics by Les Indiennes for curtains and bedding. All home bedding is high thread count cotton, the pillows are down. The second, shared bath is newly renovated with specialty lighting, marble countertop and fixtures by Waterworks. The artwork in the bedrooms and baths are watercolors by St. John artists Vicki Rogers, Carolyn Caldwell and Janet Rutnik.
Gardens have been replanted since the devastating hurricanes of 2017. Mature Date Palms, Christmas Palms, Bottle Palms, Coconut Palms and Sea Grape trees surround Fortscove in addition to many flowering plants. A hedge of fragrant Jasmine grows next to the outdoor lounge area. The landscape and pool have professional landscape lighting and can be enjoyed around the clock. This Villa is set on a rare, flat ocean front piece of land and has a perfect barefoot lawn, an amazing place to star gaze at night!

There are three double kayaks for exploring the National Park waters surrounding this special home. The access to the water suggests swim shoes. The snorkeling at the house is excellent. Sugar sand beaches are a 10 to 15 minute car drive away. Haul Over and Salt Pond are two nearby favorite beaches each with world class snorkeling and easy access to the water.
Hurricane Hole is adjacent to Fortsberg. It is a short kayak paddle from the house. Here there is incredible snorkeling and beauty. The bays and surrounding land are all part of the National Park (including the water!)
Great hiking is nearby. The Ram’s Head, Johnny Horn trail and Brown Bay trail are memorable favorites.
